Homework is a way to reinforce the concepts we learn in school. Typically, we study a letter a week throughout the school year with occasional breaks for seasonal, science or social studies themes. Homework packets are sent home on Mondays and are to be returned on Fridays. The packet includes a reading log. It is so important for young children to be read to. Not only does it foster a love of reading but it also builds vocabulary and teaches concepts of print, making it easier for the children to learn to read themselves. The annual reading goal is one book per day of school: 180. I keep track of these books on a "Shoot to othe Moon" chart; for every 10 books a child has recorded on the weekly homework log, his or her "rocket ship" moves over one of the 9 starts with the goal of reaching the "moon." The children should reach the moon each semester.
