Community Service

Did you know, that community service plays a key role in your High School career as well as increasing your point of view of the world. You may think community service is boring or stupid but for many people, it helps beyond the point of serving the community; it helps them understand people from different backgrounds and how to do something small, but with meaning.

ESHS counselor, Mrs. Burns said, “Community Service is valuable to both the individual providing an investment in the community as well as the local area being served. Serving one another is part of what defines a community.”

There are at least two clubs at El Segundo High that are involved with community service, Key club and Interact. As a member of Interact or Key club you are expected to do your part for the community and for others.

There are many types of community service, so there is always something to fit your criteria. Community service may vary from cleaning parks, to volunteering in events such as the recent L.A marathon, fundraising, charity, and worldwide service such as raising money for poor children across the world.

Another example of people helping others would be the Mentor Program at ESHS, which is directed by Miss Boden. The mentor program tutors students in a variety of subjects whether it is Mathematics or English.

The mentor program is there for any student who needs help; Miss Boden said,                      “Everyone in this life is part of the team, we all need to help one another.”

Many clubs here in El Segundo such as; Rotary, Woman’s club, and Kiwanis also perform community service, there are many places were community service can be performed and may range from the quiet town of El Segundo to the busy city of L.A.

Community service can also be very rewarding both personally and academically, many universities look for strong leadership, strong personality, and people who get the best out of their education. So if you are planning to attend a college or university remember that grades and test scores are important, but there are many people who have the same or even a better academic reputation, so what separates the good students from the bad students? The answer is, the ones who actually took the time to make the best out of their high school career.
