Santa Down The Hole

Christmas, the season to be jolly.  Everyone gathers around the Christmas tree and fireplace to unwrap their gifts.  Family and friends get together and tell stories, and on Christmas Eve they would have a gigantic feast.  On TV we hear about all the sales at department and grocery stores and the holiday commercials.  Little children wait for Santa to come to their homes not knowing that he doesn’t exist.

We all know of the jolly fat man with the white beard dressed in a red suit, but none of us have probably not thought about how he came about.  Santa Claus originated in Europe in early Christian legend.  He saved stormed-tossed sailors, defended young children, and gave generous gifts to the poor.  Today Santa is depicted as a man with bags of toys in the back of the sled being pulled through the air by eight reindeer.  This is the image that the media has created and there is still controversy over him.

Most of us no longer believe in him.  When we were little many of us believed that Santa came down our chimney and brought a bag of presents for us.  We were taught that if we were bad or stayed up he wouldn’t bring presents.  The fact is that most of us have been brought up in a tradition that is false.

In this particular period of time everyone becomes nice and giving.  Once December is over, they all go back to their old ways.  No matter what day it is, people should be kind to others.  On Christmas Eve, people get together and sing the same old songs every year, which by now is pretty much annoying.  People decorate their houses with expensive lights and decorate Christmas trees which will be brown and rotten within a week.  Some parents go out the whole evening buying gifts that they know they can’t afford and before New Years, their children will never use them again.  Instead of wasting money, parents should invest it in something greater.  It may not seem like much now, but it could have long-term advantages in the future.

By Christmas time we are all faced with the pressure of what we are going to get for our friends and family.  The malls are crowded and you can’t get anywhere unless you are there early.  People waste their time, standing and waiting at the store entrance until it opens.  This course of action is absolutely ridiculous.  Inside the store there are long cashier lines and sometimes lines outside the store just to get inside.  Junior Daniel Adomian stated, “I don’t find it logical to wait outside of a store waiting for it to open from evening to morning because first of all, if everyone wants to have that gift, it would be the latest popular craze.  Therefore, there wouldn’t be any thought behind it.  Second, it seems really stupid to wait outside all night for a piece of plastic.”  In reality, the best gift that you could ever give someone is showing that you care.

Another issue is that families wait until Christmas to get together.  Some families don’t even talk until the holidays.  Families should at least talk on a regular basis.  That’s why the human race invented the telephone and the Internet.  Yes, Christmas is the best time to meet with friends and family, but there is no reason that you cannot contact your relatives throughout the year.

It is understandable that we all love the two-week vacation and not having to worry about homework.  The thought of it is just wonderful.  But is we could have the vacation without the holiday themes and without then we wouldn’t have to worry about gifts, crazy fads and stress.  A vacation is a time when you are able to get away from all the main troubles of this world.  When you go out trying to find something that one person would like, that is not a vacation.  Running around the streets at 11 in the evening with thousands of people trying to leave town.

If we were to apply all the joy and kindness that we show to everyone during the upcoming holiday to our everyday lives, people would become closer and there wouldn’t be as much confusion as there is now.  We shouldn’t wait until the holidays to show respect; everyday of our lives we should be kind and thinking of others.  We don’t need superstitious figures such as Santa and Rudolph the red nose reindeer just to gather family and friends together.  So it is up to you, whether you want to live a lie or create a meaningful holiday.
