Boys' Swimming

The El Segundo Boys' Swim team is off to a great start, with a record number of swimmers participating this year. Over thirty boys came out for the team this year to boost the Eagles to success. So far, the team has only participated in two meets. Last week, the Eagles traveled to Beverly Hills for a practice relay meet, in which the El Segundo Boys' placed second out of six teams. Next, the Eagles faced the Moore League competitor, Lakewood, at home to start off the season. The Eagles triumphed over the visitors 112-59. Junior Matt Pifer was a four-time winner, placing first in both of his individual events as well as his two relays. Pifer won the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, and led his 200 medley and 400 freestyle teams to victory as well. Senior Ryan Berry won the 100 breaststroke and also led two relay teams to victory. Berry also came in a close second for the 200 Individual Medley. Senior Riley Brady won both of his individual events, triumphing in both the 200 and the 500 freestyle.

Sophomore Daniel Hoffman also won points for the team by a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly. Senior breaststrokers Carlo Diy and Chris Giles both placed in the 100 breaststroke, and Diy finished close behind Hoffman in the 100 butterfly to win third place for the Eagles. Senior Ryan Martin helped lead the Eagles by his two second place finishes in the 50 freestyle and the 500 freestyle, as well as his first-place in the 400 freestyle relay. Juniors Darren Giglio and Alex Edlefson both took on the 200 Individual Medley, one of the most grueling races of the meet. Edlefson was also a competitor in the 100 butterfly. Junior Chris Anderson led two of his relay teams to victory, the 200 Medley and the 200 freestyle, and earned third in the 50 freestyle. Junior Mike Briney competed in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. Seniors Pat Volosin, Ryan Walton, and Ryan Sharp, and junior Matt Briney were all missed during this meet, but will be competing the rest of the season. Walton is a key sprinter for the Eagles, and Volosin is the main distance competitor. The Eagles coaches, Scott Garinger, George Harris, and Shane Wilson are all looking forward to a great year. The Boys have a very experienced and full team, and this year is sure to be a successful one for the Boys' Swim Team!
