The spring 2002 Track and Field season is here! The team, headed by coaches Bill Consolo, David Washington, and Marcela Washington, is already enthusiastic about the new season.
The team has added on a large
number of new members this year to the already sizeable team from the 2001
season. All of this year’s
members, veterans and rookies alike, are looking forward to a prosperous
season. As sophomore distance
runner Nick Kemp put it, “We will have a very good team this season.
We have a ton of talent!” The
first three meets have already proved that the team has much potential,
which coaches are successfully bringing out during the team’s
challenging, daily practices. “Our
team has a lot of potential this year,” commented sophomore sprinter and
hurdler C’Lesa Lyons, “we just need to focus.
Our coaches are awesome and there are some really talented athletes
on the team.” These hours of strenuous workouts have not only brought-out the astounding physical abilities of the team members, but has also worked to form a strong camaraderie amongst the team. On and off of the field, the team shows great pride and support. Distance coach Bill Consolo noted, “With each meet that goes by, the team becomes a more cohesive unit. They are believing in themselves, and it will show by league finals.” All members of the team, from the sprinters to distance runners, from shot-putters to jumpers, show a positive attitude. The
team has fallen into its own renaissance along with the fan turnout.
Track and field is a high-energy sport based on both the physical
abilities of an athlete and his or her mental readiness to win.
With the fan population increasing every meet, the team has become
more motivated to do their best. “I look forward to this track
season,” commented senior distance runner Ena Correa.
“This year’s team has a lot of potential.
We just need fans to come support us and see what we have to
offer!” The track and field team urges people to come and show their Eagle spirit. For the first time, the snack bar has opened to allow fans a greater level of comfort. Schedules of track meets can be found in the Activities Office. As the season moves on, the team is sure to turn some eyes back towards Eagle track, a sport that has for some time now, been lying dormant, waiting for such strong leadership and enthusiasm exemplified in this year’s coaches and team members. Sprint coach David Washington poignantly said, “When the runner’s realize the hidden potential of their talent, El Segundo High School Track will become a definite contender.”
