GIRLS SOCCER Looks Toward to League Play

The girl’s soccer team is off to a great start. Although many players are new to varsity, the team already boasts a record of 3-3 in their pre-season play. Coaches Shelton and Mosquera are looking forward to a season of improvement. The Lady Eagles have a strong and speedy offense this year. Senior Elizabeth Lopez, juniors Danielle Ruedas and Brianna Spagnuolo, and sophomores Randy Bundy and C’Lesa Lyon are the top scorers for El Segundo so far. The halfbacks, seniors Natasha Nguyen and Leslie Ocana, along with juniors Kelly Walton and Emily Roberts are the strength of the team. The Lady Eagles also have steel-wall defense. Senior Anne-Foster-Keddie is the stopper, while other defensive players include juniors Jessica Ducette, Megan Gilbert, and Kyle Murray. Megan Hon and Casey Baine are the team’s primary goalkeepers. However, Baine is out temporarily with an injury.

The Lady Eagles got third place in the El Segundo tournament last weekend. The Eagles earned a record of 3-1 in the tournment alone. The Eagles finished in third after a close game against Brentwood. The score was tied 1-1 near the end of the game. Danielle Ruedas pulled off a clutch goal in the last two minutes, slipping right between the goalie’s legs. The Eagles were victorious 2-1. The team has also had some pre-game scrimmages against North Torrance, South Torrance, and Santa Monica. Although these were all losses, the Lady Eagles are still looking to improve before league play. The coaches are optimistic about the team, and expect to do well when league play starts.
