The El Segundo Girls' Water Polo Team kicked off their season on December 4 with a home game against La Serna. Although El Segundo fell to La Serna last year by one point, the Lady Eagles easily beat the team 9-4. The Eagles led 4-1 after the first quarter, 6-2 at halftime, and 8-3 after the third quarter. Senior Captain Lynn Langdon had four goals and one assist, and senior Captain Desiree Gant, senior Jana Wianecki, junior Alissa Volosin, junior Kamille Kemp, and sophomore Katy Lawlor each scored one. Senior Goalie, Gemma Gaudio, had many saves. Former Eagles goalie Amber Korner is out temporarily with a knee injury, so Gaudio was able to step up to her first year as a goalie. Gaudio is learning fast and is an asset to the Lady Eagles' defense. Last weekend the girls traveled to Los Altos to play in the annual Ayala Varsity Tournament. After easily winning the first-round game, the Eagles advanced to play first-ranked Tustin. Although juniors Kourtney Schepman and Martine Yemma played great defense, the Eagles were not able to hold Tustin. The Eagles fell 8-4 to Tustin, who went on to place second in the tournament. However, the Eagles were able to pull off two wins on Saturday. First, they played La Serna again, and triumphed 4-2. Volosin and Wianecki each scored two. Next, the Eagles faced Burroughs of Burbank and beat them easily 15-5. Langdon scored three and Volosin scored four. Senior Courtney O'Donnell, Juniors Kamille Kemp and Nicole Parsonault, and Lawlor each scored one for the win against Burroughs. The Lady Eagles faced undefeated South Pasadena on Tuesday and triumphed 7-4. The score was tied for most of the game. However, in the second half, the Eagles were able to score three unanswered goals by Langdon, Gant, and O'Donnell for the win against South Pasadena. Coaches Scott Garinger and George Harris are very excited about this season. "This looks like the strongest girls team El Segundo has ever seen," exclaims coach George Harris. "I think this season will be very successful." The girls are looking forward to league play in January, especially against rivals Redondo and Mira Costa. The frosh-soph team is also doing extraordinarily well this season. Coach Shane Wilson is coaching the successful team. The frosh-soph team is undefeated so far, with victories over La Serna and South Pasadena. Janel Schepman, Danielle Flynn, and Jeannette Gant were the leading scorers in both games. |
