The El Segundo Girls' Water Polo team finished a phenomenal season last week, ending 4-2 in league and 21-8 overall, the best record an El Segundo Girls' team has ever completed. The Lady Eagles also triumphed over Peninsula for the first time in seven years, 8-6. Senior goalie Gemma Gaudio made seven saves for the Eagles. Senior Lynn Langdon had two goals, and junior Alissa Volosin added four. Desiree Gant and Katy Lawlor also scored for the Eagles. The Eagles also defeated Beverly Hills by more than ten goals, with almost every member scoring a goal. El Segundo went on to defeat Culver 4-3 at home last week. The game remained tied until the last minute; the Eagles triumphed over Culver with a clutch goal by Gant. Juniors Martine Yemma and Volosin, as well as sophomore Katy Lawlor, each added a goal in the victory. In addition to goalie Gaudio, injured senior Amber Korner added an awesome quarter for the Lady Eagles for the first time this season. Although Korner was temporarily out due to a knee injury, she is a vital part of the team, coaching first-year goalie Gaudio. However, Gemma Gaudio proved to be a phenomenal goalie for El Segundo this season. The Lady Eagles finished 3rd in the Bay League, knocking off Peninsula, Culver, and Redondo for a spot in the playoffs. The Lady Eagles earned a spot in the Division IV C.I.F. playoffs last week. They faced Garden Grove for a wildcard game, and triumphed easily 16-4. Many ladies scored, including multiple goals for Gant, Langdon, Volosin, Lawlor, and seniors Jana Wianecki and Courtney O'Donnell, and juniors Kamille Kemp and Lindsey Riggins. Juniors Riggins and Amanda McCann also provided awesome defense in the victory. The Eagles continued on to a first round C.I.F. game against Tustin. Having previously lost to Tustin 9-4 earlier in the season in tournament play, the Eagles were faced with a challenge. The Tustin Stillers came out strong last Thursday, scoring 4 unanswered goals in the first half of the game, despite killer defense from juniors Kourtney Schepman and Martine Yemma. However, the Eagles came out strong in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals by Langdon, Wianecki, and O'Donnell. However, this was not enough, and the Stillers answered back with two more goals, only to be met by one more for the Eagles. El Segundo fell 4-6 in the loss. The lady Eagles had a phenomenal season, and set a new record for El Segundo Girls' Water polo with 21 wins. "This is truly a unique group of girls," say head coached Scott Garinger and George Harris. "We have never had a group like this…They were truly phenomenal." |
