This year's wrestling team ended up third in league, which is probably the best we could have expected. Third is a very good ranking, and because wrestling does not have the same resources directed towards it like many other sports such as baseball do, we cannot assume that wrestling will be able to compete as well as other teams who have more support from their schools. Fan support was good this year for the team. Many people came to home games, but support at away matches was mediocre. This year, five wrestlers went to CIF. They were Joel Eagan, David Sands, Remford Poon, Ryan Barizoski, and Alex Edlefson. This is obviously an ample amount of wrestlers who succeeded in dominating their weight classes. Many of this year's wrestlers are seniors, however, so next year will be a challenge. If next year's team recruits a large amount of new wrestlers, they have a chance to win league. Talking to many people around school, there are three prevailing views on wrestling; one is indifference, one is respect, and one is homophobia. Nick Synadinos said, "I don't know anything about wrestling." Eric Martinez said, "I heard the wrestling team is really futzing tough. Joel Eagan got a compound fracture and continued wrestling." The view that wrestling is a homoerotic sport may not be completely untrue, however. Shaun Benjamin said, "One time two wrestlers were kissing in English class." Brian McAtee said, "My junk got on someone's face once at league finals. It was funny as hell." I guess people can draw their own conclusions, but the thought of sweaty men voluntarily pressing their bodies up against each other kind of scares me. |
