Girl's Water Polo

The Lady Eagle Water Polo Team continues with the most phenomenal season El Segundo has ever seen from a girls' water polo team. The Eagles boast a record of 16-6, the best record the girls' have ever accomplished. The ladies started off the league play with an awesome game against long-time rival, the Redondo Seahawks. The Seahawks have triumphed over the Eagles the past two years, both in very close matches. However, on January 3rd, the Eagles were able to easily defeat Redondo 7-4 at the El Segundo Plunge. Senior goalie Gemma Gaudio made eleven saves to bring the team to victory. After El Segundo's first league win, the girls went on to face Mira Costa at the Mustang's pool. After a 4-1 deficit at halftime, the Lady Eagles rallied back in the second half with four unanswered goals. However, the Mustangs scored back with a minute left in the game, ending the game in a 6-6 tie. The match continued into overtime periods. Mira Costa scored to make the game 6-5. Thirty seconds before the overtime was over, Lynn Langdon made a steal and assisted Desiree Gant in scoring the tying goal. The game then continued into a sudden-death overtime period; the score 6-6. Unfortunately, the Mustangs were able the pull off a goal and won the game 7-6 after three overtime periods.

The Lady Eagles, however, made a comeback last weekend at the Western Tournament. Lynn Langdon's five goals led the Eagles to victory over Santa Fe in the first round of the 32-team tournament. Kourtney Schepman, Courtney O'Donnell, Katy Lawlor, Lindsey Riggins, and Alissa Volosin all scored in the 18-1 victory for El Segundo. Schepman and junior Kamille Kemp provided the Eagles with great defense. The Eagles advanced to the quarterfinals with a 5-4 victory over Santa Ana Valley, with goals from Langdon, Schepman, Volosin, and Jana Wianecki, and then reached the semifinals by defeating El Rancho 5-1. The next day, the Lady Eagles reached the finals of the Western Tournament for the first time with a 6-5 win over Laguna Hills, with a winning goal by junior Martine Yemma. However, the Eagles fell in the final round of the tournament to top-ranked Crescenta Valley 9-3. The Eagles finished second out of 32 teams for the first time in El Segundo history. Come out and support your Lady Eagles today as they take on Peninsula at the El Segundo Plunge at 3:00 p.m.
