After a real demoralizing loss to the Peninsula Panthers, the Eagles hoped to change their recent fortune against the Torrance Tartars. On May 1 the Eagles flexed their offensive muscles outscoring Culver 11 to 5. Ricky Talanoa earned the win and improved to 5-3. Talanoa also slammed two homeruns over the fence and knocked in 3 runs. Matt Engle had a shot of his own that brought in 3 runs, and added two more RBIs later in the game. The win put the Eagles to 11-14 overall and 4-7 in league. At the beginning of May, Tino Gomez led the team with 71 at bats, 16 runs, 26 hits, and an average of .366. Kevin Wright had 73 at bats, 12 runs, 26 hits, and an average of .356. Chris Ornelos had 72 at bats, 13 runs, 25 hits, an average of .347 and has 21 RBIs and 4 HRs. Steve Eno had had 73 at bats, 12 runs, 25 hits, and an average of .342. Finally, Phil Goff rounds out the top 5 batting averages with 53 at bats, 14 runs, 18 hits, and an average of .340. Talanoa led the team on the mound, with an era of 2.43 and a record of 6 wins and 3 losses. Next the Eagles traveled to Culver City where they dominated, winning 9 to 2. El Segundo broke the game open in the second inning with a 7 runs. Tino Gomez led the offensive attack batting 3 for 4, with 2 RBIs and 2 doubles. Brad Franks and Engle each doubled and Derrek Duarte had a solo shot. Talanoa got another win, and tallied 5 strikeouts with no walks. The Eagles met up with Culver again and the contest ended with the same result. El Segundo trailed 6 to 3 in the fifth, but was able to rally, and they closed out the sixth inning with a 6 run deluge. The Eagles played successful small-ball, with doubles by 5 players, including Gomez, Eno, Franks, Talanoa and McNally. The Eagles pulled out the 9-6 victory and Hendrick got the win to improve to 3-3. The win put the Eagels at 13-15, 6-8. The year was somewhat disappointing for the Eagles, who barely missed a post-season birth. But, despite the tough season, the Eagles will no doubt be back in 2003. |
