Boy’s Varsity Tennis played in singles and doubles in
league finals. League finals
consisted of Jason Van Patten, Christian Florido, and Jean-Pierre
Badon. Van Patten lost in the first round, and Badon and Florido each
lost in the semifinals. Florido played the number two seed; Badon played
the number one seed. They both played well, but it just wasn’t their
day. Even though they lost in singles, when teamed together they won in
doubles in league finals. The season
ended, and El Segundo claimed the Ocean League Doubles Title. Badon and
Florido went to CIF as the Ocean League winners and represented the
league. They defeated teams from Lompoc and Rio Mesa before falling to
top-seeded Beverly Hills in the CIF Tournament.
While at CIF, they eliminated Lompoc High 6-7, 6-2, 10-8 in the
first round of the sectional playoff. Then they beat Rio Mesa 6-3, 4-6,
10-8, both matches being decided by 10-point tiebreakers. Needing one more
victory to advance in CIF, the Eagles had to get by top-seeded Beverly
Hills, champions of the Bay League. Clearly overmatched, as were all the
other teams were at this tournament, Beverly Hills prevailed 6-1, 6-0 in
the quarterfinal. “JP and
Christian played great tennis the first two rounds and we were not
disappointed. However,
those guys at Beverly are much more experienced and older.
We need to practice hard and get back here again next year,”
