Boys' Swimming

The El Segundo Boys' Swim Team is one of the most successful teams El Segundo has ever seen. The boys are almost undefeated thus far in the season, 5-1 overall, and 4-1 in the Bay League. Last week was a historic moment in El Segundo history when the Eagles defeated the Mira Costa Mustangs for the first time 1990. Head coaches Scott Garinger and George Harris were amazed that the Eagles were victorious, even in the Mustangs' home pool. Earlier in the week, the Boys' Swim Team added to their almost perfect record by defeating visiting Beverly Hills.

Last Thursday, the Eagles beat Mira Costa at their home pool by a close 6 points, finishing 88-82. Junior Matt Pifer was a four-time winner, in the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and two relays. Seniors Ryan Berry and Pat Volosin were three-time winners. Volosin was victorious in the 200 and the 500 freestyle, while Berry won the Individual Medley and the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Daniel Hoffman won the 100 butterfly, while seniors Carlo Diy, Riley Brady, and Ryan Martin were also single winners. Carlo Diy was able to win many points with some key second place finishes, as well as Chris Anderson, second place finisher in the 50 freestyle.

The following week, the El Segundo boys were able to crush visiting Beverly Hills 110-60. Once again, Pifer, Berry, and Volosin were all multiple winners. Key seniors Carlo Diy, Ryan Martin, and Riley Brady were able to rack up multiple points in the victory. The Eagles were able to easily defeat visiting Santa Monica last Tuesday as well, keeping their undefeated record. However, the boys lost a close meet to Culver City last Thursday, the most competitive team in the Bay League. If the Boys' Swim Team maintains this pace, they are in a good position to win the Bay League title for the first time in years. This is the strongest boys' swim team El Segundo has fielded in a long time, and is looking forward to winning first place in League. Half of the title is the team's league record, which is 5-1. The other part of the title is how competitive the team is at Bay League finals this week. The boys are looking forward to placing in the top of the Bay League competition, and will hopefully grasp their league title. Come cheer on your El Segundo Boys this week at Bay League Finals held at Mira Costa High School!
