Varsity Netters Defeat Torrance

Varsity tennis played Torrance High School on April 16 at Recreational Park. During the first round of play, the Eagles looked like they were headed to a close, nail-biting match. Winning two of three first round singles matches, and winning two of three first rounds doubles matches. The second round was actually the decision maker. The doubles players won only one out of the three matches. So, it was up to the singles players to pull through in the second round.

This is often a dilemma that the Eagles have to face, by putting their strongest players in singles. This was soon to change when the doubles players pulled through in the third round match, winning two of three matches to nail the win for the team. Christian Florido and Jean-Pierre Badon didn’t loose any matches in this head up.

Tyler Reynolds and Jeff Powell have really added to the doubles side of the team. They are the new pair of players to inspire others to show eagle spirit. The “Deadly Duo” has won seven out of nine doubles matches in the last month. They are surely headed for a strong finish at the end of the season. They should play well enough to be tough competitors in the CIF League Finals.

Junior varsity also played Torrance High School at ESHS. The team played well enough to squeeze through lofty competition. Chris Luu, explains how the team has been doing so far this season, “The Junior Varsity team is very competitive, and eager to win. They also practice with determination and hard work. I am sure that each person on the team is very dedicated to becoming a varsity member next year.”

Some of the star J.V. players are Jonathan Wong, Anthony Stier, Eric Rhoades, Alan Rush, and Li Zhu. All junior varsity players practice at Rec. Park everyday, while varsity is at the school. Some players come to both practices to play with the better players. It is a learning and fun atmosphere for the players. Also, Coach Kirby Onaga inspires them to focus and practice with a purpose, in order to become better players.  Wong and Stier have been playing well in their matches. They have a positive record and their improving everyday. They are soon to be tough competition to the varsity players.

Varsity tennis played Culver City April 18. Culver City has a very impressive doubles team, so it was up to the doubles players to come through. They did well, but did not win. It was expected that the doubles teams were going to lose against Culver City; but that didn’t stop them from trying. Varsity doubles lost nine out of nine matches. Culver City swept through doubles as if they were cleaning their kitchen.

Varsity singles won six out of nine matches, each player earning two matches a piece. Jason Van Patten finally beat his archrival Zack Solomon, 6-4. The set was very close, but Jason was able to get the best of his opponent. He worked the ball really well, and was able to get into the match mentally. His match was very impressive.
