Eagles Win 22-12, Beating Tartars

Quarterback Tyson Hawley is getting better and better with every game. On October 12, Hawley threw a touchdown and ran for his own six points in this game against the Torrance Tartars. This was a doozy from the start. Kicker Patrick Rooney made an onside kick in the opening seconds and was recovered by Jon Nichols for Eagles possession. Running back Andrew Adam ran wild in this one. Adam scored the first touchdown of the game and scored the two points afterwards. On the Tartar's first play, Robert Morrison recovered a fumble at the Tartars 37 yard line. Hawley then ran a quarterback sneak at the one for a touchdown, with Rooney kicking the extra point to make it 15-0. With 30 seconds left on the clock in the third, Austin Pruden caught Hawley's pass to make it 21-6, with Rooney kicking the extra point again. In the fourth, Jesse Wood stole a pass from the Tartars at about the 25-yard line. The Tartars forced a fumble on third down, scored a touchdown two plays later, but Brad Howell stopped the extra point from getting across. To put the coup-de-grace on the Tartars, Bryan Yatabe picked off a pass in the fourth with just under 2:30 left on the clock. Two minutes and thirty seconds later, the Frosh/Soph Eagles were celebrating their victory.

Austin Pruden said before the game his shoulder was close to being 100% recovered. He also said, "This team has improved a lot since week one although were still progressing." A new face to look at for the Eagles is Christian Garlitos. Garlitos is a freshman who will be playing wide receiver and corner back wearing number 42. He wanted to play Pop Warner football, but his dad urged him to play for the high school. He thinks this team is great, and will improve greatly. Tyson Hawley is playing like a Varsity quarterback, which should get colleges asking him to play for them. Hawley has been a great quarterback all year long. He is a candidate for MVP this season and continues to improve. Andrew Adam earns offensive MVP for this week. Adam scored two touchdowns, got the extra two points and ran wild. Adam ran much like a pro running back. Adam's longest run of the game was his second rush, which was about 45 yards, putting the Eagles in the red zone. The defensive MVP of the day was made by Bryan Yatabe who got an interception in the fourth to prevent the Torrance Tartars from scoring any more touchdowns. Yatabe also had some knockdowns early in the game, making it impossible for receivers on his side to catch the ball. Another MVP was Patrick Rooney who kicked an extra point and completed a beautiful onside kick. The Eagles were on their game. Four key plays were made by the Eagles that could have changed the outcome of the game. First, Adam stopped a two-point conversion from crossing the goal line. Next, Pruden picked off a pass and ran 30 yards to the mid-field mark. Then, Wood got an interception at the goal line on the next Tartar possession. Howell stopped a two-point conversion from scoring in the fourth quarter. Finally, Yatabe got an interception with two minutes left in the fourth, which would end the game for the Torrance Tartars. The defense seems to get better towards the goal line.
