Boy's Water Polo Starts Their Record-Breaking Season

The El Segundo boys' water polo team is off to a record-breaking season as they start league play. Last weekend El Segundo hosted the Annual Henry Stewart water polo tournament. El Segundo easily beat Calabasas and Notre Dame to advance to the semifinals against Peninsula. Last year, the boys played a heartbreaker against Peninsula. They went into overtime and lost by one goal at Peninsula's pool. However, El Segundo faced the Panthers last Saturday and nearly shut them out 8-1. Peninsula didn't score one goal until the fourth quarter, thanks to El Segundo's steel-wall defensive seniors Ryan Martin, Kevin Wright, and senior goalie Carlo Diy.

El Segundo advanced to the finals against long-time rival Mira Costa. Last year, Mira Costa defeated our Eagles by at least 6 goals, and went on to win the CIF Division III championship. Mira Costa has two players that play on the Junior National team. However, El Segundo played the closest game against this water polo giant in the history of El Segundo water polo. The Mustangs and the Eagles faced each other last Saturday for the tournament championship. Both teams played incredible defense and had a very low-scoring game. El Segundo scored, and then Mira Costa answered back. El Segundo led 3-2 after three quarters, and the teams were tied 4-4 in the fourth quarter. Goalie Carlo Diy surpassed the abilities of Junior National goalie Will Didinger, making a total of 18 saves and playing the game of his life. Seniors Pat Volosin, AJ Lester, and Riley Brady all scored. El Segundo was so close to victory when Mira Costa scored two quick goals with two minutes left in the quarter. El Segundo answered back with one, but the clock ran out and El Segundo was defeated 6-5. The Eagles were down, but not out. They had played the best game of their life, and still had another chance on Thursday against Mira Costa, one that mattered for the league, and most likely the deciding game for the league championship.
