Eagles Lose a Heartbreaker

Maybe it’s the schedule.  Maybe there aren’t enough home games for our Frosh/Soph team.  Whatever the cause is, the Eagles are 0-3 now.  Sophomore Austin Pruden, still feeling the affects from an injury, played a big role in South Torrance.  With 2:30 left in the first quarter, Pruden picked up an interception.  The Eagles had to punt facing a fourth and ten.  It was 21-0 at the end of the first half with the South Torrance Spartans leading.  All hope seemed lost, but not with the Eagles.  As soon as the Spartans were beginning to relax, the team never gave up.  After halftime, right off the bat Jesse Wood recovered a fumble on the bottom of a dog pile.  Later that drive, quarterback Tyson Hawley threw a touchdown pass to Pruden in the third quarter facing a third and five.  Pruden would also catch a pass for the two point conversion, making it 21-8 with ten minutes left in the third.  Not much happened in the rest of the third.

At the beginning of the fourth, sophomore Ruben Figueroa recovered a fumble to make it first and ten Eagles.  On the same drive, Pruden would again score a touchdown.  This time, Wood completed the pass.  The two point conversion was incomplete, making the score 21-14.  On the kick-off, Wood would again recover the football on an onside kick by Hawley.  Bryan Yatabe attempted a rush in Spartan territory; the ball was stripped from his hands with the Spartans recovering.  But Robert Morrison recovered another fumble for the Eagles.  Brad Howell received a pass from Hawley to put the Eagles on the one-yard line.  Hawley successfully perform the old quarterback sneak for another six points.  Brad Howell received another pass for two points making it 22-21, Eagles.

When the Eagles got the ball with one minute left in the game, the Spartans used all three timeouts to keep time on the clock.  The Eagles defense did not allow one yard until a 43-yard pass was completed to end the game at 28-22.  Although the Eagles lost, they made an impossible comeback.  The defensive M.V.P was none other than Wood who recovered two fumbles in this game.  Wood also threw a touchdown pass in the fourth.  The big story and the offensive M.V.P was Pruden who caught two touchdown passes.  On defense, Pruden also got an interception plus recovered a fumble.

In game one, Pruden suffered a separated shoulder late in the game.  In game two, his shoulder once again popped out of place, but it wasn’t as crucial as the previous because he would later pop his shoulder back in.  This game, Pruden stayed injury free to keep the Eagles in the game all the way.  If Pruden can remain healthy the whole game for another seven games, the Eagles could breeze past their opponents.

Hawley has been a second half performer much like professional quarterback Brett Favre.  Hawley was hurt mildly in the third quarter, but he shook it off and remained in the game till the end.  Hawley threw for 20 completions out of 40 attempts, all for 219 yards.  This equaled two touchdown passes, twice a two point conversion was successful, and an interception.  Hawley could well be M.V.P for the Eagles in the 2001 season.

This was a tough game for the Eagles.  The fans at the game were very supportive.  As New York Yankee catcher, Yogi Berra once said, “It aint over ‘till it’s over!”  These Eagles proved it isn’t over until it’s over.  The Eagles were close all the way till the end.  Now the Eagles need to focus on next week’s game, and forget all about this one.
