Varsity Football

After the week layoff due to the September 11 attack, the Eagles were ready to resume their 2001 season at Filmore.  From the onset it was clear that the Eagles had come to play.  Quarterback Matt Engle came out firing and threw for 313-yards and 4 touchdowns.  The first score of the game came for El Segundo via a 41-yard field goal.  On their second drive Engle hit receiver Brad Franks for a 2-yard touchdown.   In the second quarter, the Eagles cracked the game wide open with three unanswered touchdowns.  Engle scrambled into the end zone on a 1-yard quarterback keeper. Chris Ornelos joined the scoring bash with a 6-yard touchdown reception, and Brad Franks ended the half with a 7-yard touchdown grab.  In the second half, the Filmore Flash salvaged whatever pride they had left with a 27-yard touchdown toss.  But the Eagles would not end their scoring flurry and Brad Franks caught his third touchdown of the game on a 38-yard bomb from Engle.   The end score was El Segundo 38, Filmore 8.  Franks had 5 receptions for 94 yards, and combined with Phil Goff for 113 yards on the ground.  Chris Ornelos chipped in with 5-catches for 36-yards and 5-runs for 20 yards.  Steve Eno had 5 catches for 83-yards and 4 tackles on the defensive end, and Ricky Talanoa wrapped up 6 and had 1 sack.   The win was the Eagle’s first of the season.

The Eagles next match up was against the South Torrance Spartans who were 6-6-1 last season.  The Eagles jumped out early as Engle went 5 for 6 passing on the first drive and capped it off with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Senior receiver, Bobby Summers.  On the ensuing possession, Spartan running-back Chauncey Washington coughed up the ball on the El Segundo 33-yardline.  On Engle’s first touch of the ball, he connected with Chris Ornelos for a 33-yard touchdown pass.  However, on the following possession, Washington, South’s sleeping giant running back awoke and took off for an 81-yard touchdown gallop to bring South within one score.  In the second quarter, Engle hooked up with Brad Franks for a 12-yard touchdown snag.  South quarterback Sean Flynn responded with a 5-yard quarterback draw for the touchdown.  After an El Segundo punt, Washington, who gained 1,548 yards last season, was handed the ball 5 times and earned 45-yards, ending the drive with a 2-yard touchdown.    After an Engle 26-yard field goal, Washington took the ball 7 more times and gained 42 more yards and yet another touchdown, putting the score at South – 28, El Segundo – 24.  After the Eagles were stuffed on the goal line by a staunch Spartan defense, Washington broke free and sprinted 91-yards on 14 carries.  The Eagles ended the game with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Brad Franks, but it was too little, too late as the Eagles fell to South by a score of 34 to 31.  Washington tallied an incredible 344-yards in the running exhibition.

After the disappointing loss to South, the Eagles looked to bounce back against the Centennial Apaches.  In what can only be described as an absolute rout, Matt Engle went 15 for 23 for 253 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Eagles blew out Centennial 50-0.  The game started slowly as Engle knocked a 27-yard field goal through the uprights.  Engle followed up the field goal with a 1-yard touchdown dash.  The second quarter was a complete air raid by the Eagles.  Engle hooked up with Ryan McDonald on twice for a 50-yard touchdown bomb and a 29-yard touchdown pass.  Engle also found Steve Eno in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown.  The blow-out continued into the second half when Chris Ornelos scored from 4-yards out and Jeremy Hopson caught a 21-yard touchdown throw.  The Eagles also added another score in the fourth quarter, but by that time the game had been long over.  The final result was a one-sided scoring torrent that ended in a 50-0 El Segundo victory and put the Eagles at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league.
