The El Segundo boys' water polo team kicked off their season this August at 12:01 a.m. for Midnight Madness. This first official practice for the fall season topped off a successful summer league. This summer, the Eagles water polo team played more than 65 games and improved phenomenally, playing against some of the top-ranked teams in CIF. This year promises to be one of the most victorious for the Eagles. Only losing two players from last year, this team contains eleven exceptional seniors: Ryan Berry, Riley Brady, Carlo Diy, Chris Giles, AJ Lester, Colt Lusby, Ryan Martin, Ryan Sharp, Pat Volosin, Ryan Walton, and Kevin Wright. These eleven boys are four-year returning players and promise to bring this team to the top. Juniors Matt Briney, Josh Clemmer, Brian Kohler, Matt Pifer and sophomore Daniel Hoffman complete the team. Head coach George Harris is very pleased with the incredibly veteran squad: "These boys demonstrate awesome leadership and team camaraderie!" Harris also exclaims that "…the most exciting part of this year is the number of enthusiastic players we have!" The entire boys' water polo program boasts a record 42 players, the most an El Segundo water polo team has ever had. This year's team boasts an incredible record thus far in the season: 6-1. Last week the boys traveled to the competitive Ayala tournament, and placed second out of 32 teams. The Eagles won every game except for the last, against the defending tournament champions, and placed higher than any previous Eagles team. Last week the boys' water polo team triumphed over Crespi and Arcadia easily. Harris feels lucky to have been "dealt such a great hand, both with my players and my awesome co-coaches, Scott Garinger and Shane Wilson." This year promises to be a record-breaking year for the El Segundo Boys' Water polo team. They are practicing hard for their upcoming league games. The toughest challenges for the Eagles this year will be not only Peninsula High School, but also defending CIF-champion and El Segundo rival Mira Costa High. The Eagles are already ranked in the top five for CIF Division III, behind Mira Costa and Crescenta Valley. Come out and support your at their home games at the El Segundo Plunge! |
