Frosh-Soph Football

The 2001 Frosh/Soph football team might be just as good as it was last year, or so the coaches and players think. Sophomores Adam Hettinger and Tom Cook will lead this year's squad onto the field. Other captains include Sophomores Robert Morrison, Jesse Wood, and Bryan Yatabe. Assistant coach Mike Mooko says, "This team looks good, and has lots of momentum going into this season." This year's strategy is the same as last year that carried the Frosh/Soph Eagles to a well above average 7-3 record. The coaches look forward to 10 exciting games of strong blocking, speedy receivers, and one great overall team with the Eagles being prepared to tackle any team in their way. The coaches claim that the offensive line could be the strong point in the already strong Eagles, who have good potential, and possibly better than last year's Eagles going into the 2001 season. Although the coaches are not sure whether or not their new freshman players can pull through with the big games on the line, but they're sure they can provide a winning team.

Sophomore Mychael Castillo says, "This team needs to be loyal to their teammates and not try and outdo each other. Another big key is to just have fun." If the team takes the game too seriously, there could be a downfall in the mighty Eagles. Castillo also replied, "The offensive line is the strongest point in the Eagles, and that the offense will be a big part towards the road to success. "Sophomore co-captain Robert Morrison says, "This team will give it its all, no matter what the score is." The defense is another very strong point of this ball team. The game play is no other than just to do one's part on both offense and defense and be rewarded with some points. This team can go undefeated if everyone can make the plays one at a time.

A quote from sophomore Austin Pruden states, "I think that everybody should come watch the El Segundo Frosh/Soph team because we will go all the way this year, no questions asked." Pruden also quotes, "This team has got the potential for an undefeated season if we can make the simple plays. These games bring all of us together for 48 minutes a game, once a week.

"Sophomore co-captain Jesse Wood says, "This defense is the tempo of our game; they're going to pull through when we need it the most." Jesse also stated, "That not only do the captains need to lead the way, but also leaders of tomorrow need to pinch in and help lead this team on the road to success."

The Eagles need to make the fundamental plays. If one receiver can't make the easy plays and he's on the starting line-up, it won't be good. The starters need to be players who can remain consistent, make the easy plays, and know your teammates along with their strong and weak abilities. The offensive line needs to give their quarterback, Tyson Hawley, enough time to find his receivers and lead them to the ball. The running backs must be able to find the holes this offensive line will make. The running backs also need to block opposing defenders in order to breeze past them.

If the defense is as good as everybody claims they are, then they should be able to apply constant pressure on the opposing quarterback. The defensive backs must stick with the receiver all the way through. You never know when the ball could come flying towards you. The linebackers must be watching any kind of trick play they may see and let every teammate know what's going on. If the defense can hold opponents to minimum points and force them to punt, the offense can back the "D" up with some points. If the Eagles can keep their basic game plan, this should be a great season!
