Girls Tennis Kick Off a Great Season!!!

The El Segundo High School Girls' Varsity Tennis team kicked off their season last week. The season began with tough losses to Chadwick, and Marlboro. The Eagles were competitive, however. The next match on the schedule was at North Torrance on September 12. This match, however, was hampered by the closing of America's airports due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington D.C. New nets were ordered for their courts and were due to have arrived for the match, but with no planes flying, only two courts could be used.

On the 13th, the tennis team had their first league match. With the season about to begin, Coach Kirby said, "The loss of seven seniors [from last year] is not quite devastating, however, it does hurt." He also said that in light of all the crucial seniors, who left last year, the Lady Eagle's Tennis Team is still going to be strong because of the enthusiasm of the team. The Eagles' most experienced player is Kelly Moore. The team does, however, have a new player, Rose Jeng. She won her first match 3-0. "She will help the team a lot." States coach Kirby. He also said that in addition to Rose Jeng, and Kelly Moore's help with the team, Cathy Villalobos, Alex Heckaman, Danielle Ruedas, have experience in tennis, and will be assets to the team. Jackie Vo, Enna Correa, and Lauren Bargman are not as experienced; however, they are showing great improvement as the season progresses. The team has excellent morale, as they look forward to this year's challenges, after the loss of last year's Seniors.
