Boys Soccer Goes Down Fighting
By Varun Roperia, Staff Writer
With their last game on February 8, the boys soccer team has
ended a season of ups and downs, full of emotional highs and lows.
With an overall record of four wins, eleven losses, and two ties
(4-11-2), the Eagles did not make it to CIF this year. Of their five
last games, the Eagles lost three, tied once, and finally secured
their first win in the last weeks against Centennial, ending the
season with a League record of two wins, six losses, and two ties
(2-6-2).
Despite having won
their game on the January 23 against Centennial, this brief respite
did not last long, and the team continued on its losing pattern,
which is why it was not exactly a surprise when they lost once again
against North Torrance 1-2. The Eagles then proceeded to lose their
game on the January 30 to Torrance 1-3. After tying for the second
time against South Torrance 2-2, the Eagles, almost as if on cue,
lost once more to Lawndale, though this was mostly because of the
loss of junior Joseph “Tarzan” Fernandez, which resulted in the
partial crippling of our defense. Finally, on February 8, our boys
soccer team won the last game of the season against Centennial,
providing as much of a moral victory as an athletic one. Centennial
was the only team the Eagles could beat all season.
It is not yet
very clear how the team will be shaped next year. Coach Alan Kelley
valiantly tried to enact several experimental changes throughout the
season, reorganizing the team by changing the number of forwards and
defenders in an effort to find a balance that worked best. As the
seniors of the team move on and others come to fill in the gaps, we
cannot tell how the team will perform next year. However, after this
battering season, the Eagles can only move forward to bigger and
better things.
