Baseball Starts
Even

The baseball team has so
far had an even season in the Pioneer league, they are 5-5 overall.
After two close losses to Redondo, put them on a 3 game losing
streak which was broken in the second game against Mira Costa on
3/21.
The first of the back-to-back games against Redondo was
anything but a good game. El Segundo allowed 3 runs and only scored
1. Senior Jeff Dorman batted fellow senior Jeff Miera in for the
single run of the Eagles’ game. Sophomore Joey Schaffhauser pitched
6 innings and allowed all 3 hits which turned into 3 runs. Although
he did have 8 strikeouts throughout the game, he let all 3 runs in
by Redondo. The final score of the game was 1-3 in favor of Redondo.
Right after this game, they played another game, against Redondo.
Back-to-back games against Redondo did not prove to be wise for the
Eagles. The game started strong for the Eagles, gaining the lead
early; 4-2. This soon ended when Redondo came back strong with 4
runs in the 5th inning which gave them a strong lead.
While being down by two runs, the Eagles knew they had to score, and
quickly. To play the 6th inning, they put in junior
Jonathan Aceves who allowed zero runs and only 1 hit. During the
last inning for the Eagles, they tried to go for the win, but only
scored 1 run. The final score was 5-6, and it was not a good night
for the Eagles.
The Eagles also attended the Redondo tournament and
played one game against El Camino Real. The Eagles had a really hard
game against them too; none of the Eagles could really hit well
enough to make a run at all. They had 4 pitchers in all during the
game, and they all let in at least one run. The Eagles lost the
tournament for them; the final score was 0-9.
The next back-to-back games were against Mira Costa on
3/21. The first game was a blowout in favor of El Segundo. The
Eagles started and ended the game with senior Mike Quinones
pitching. He had a great game with 5 runs allowed and 7 strikeouts.
The game was a hard fight with the talented Costa team but it ended
up proving El Segundo the better team during the game. The final
score was 11-5 in favor of El Segundo, ending their 3-game losing
streak. The next game of the night was a hard battle between both
teams. The Eagles were staying strong until the 4th
inning, but Mira Costa came out strong with two homeruns by one of
their players. The final score was 4-7 with Mira Costa on top.
The season so far has proved to be a tough one; the
Eagles really need to step up their game. For the season to be a
success, they need to find the few pitchers they can rely on to win
games. While watching most of the games, it seems that seniors Bobby
Dugan and Quinones are the two top choices for pitching. Good luck.
