Girls Softball

March 9 was the official
start of the Girl’s Softball season at El Segundo. With three home
games, the long journey began to the postseason; the team has more
or less come ahead out of the gates. Although they lost their first
game at Rec Park by a small 1-3 margin, they have won two straight
by eight or more points, with another game (as of press time) on
Saturday, March 24.
Their first game ended rather disappointingly with a 1-3
loss to Banning High School at El Segundo’s Recreation Park as it
was no doubt, all defense. Sophomore Jenna Rich had the single run
of the game, with junior Heather White batting her in. Rich pitched
a tough game, but it did not work out for the young Eagle.
Putting the
loss behind them, the Eagles came to a successful win with a score
of 10-2, knocking out Bishop Montgomery in an 8 point blowout. The
first inning showed two strong runs, but Banning came back with two
of their own in the second inning, tying up the game. Throughout the
rest of the game, Banning was held scoreless as El Segundo ran eight
more to the plate. El Segundo’s offensive aggression led to 2 home
runs, one by Ashlee Leon and the other by Jenna Rich. The team’s
batting average hovered at a notable .500. On average, every other
pitch ended with a hit, leading to 9 total RBI’s by the team. The
RBI’s were well spread among the team, with 2 each by Jenna Rich and
Elizabeth Garland, 1 by Kaycee Wilkie, and 4 by Ashlee Leon.
The Eagle’s success continued on into their next match
against West Torrance. The Eagle’s consistent pitching led the team
to a 9-0 victory in which they pitched a shutout. The Eagles slammed
home four runs in the first inning, and ran five more in the fourth.
Their offensive aggression was also apparent in this game as the
Eagle’s put out immense effort at bat. Also contributing to the win
was the fact that the Eagles committed no errors.
As long as the Eagles keep up the consistent,
well-rounded batting, great pitching, and a high level of effort
while minimizing errors, they should end the season with a good
record and a ticket to the postseason.
