Swimming Flats Through Early Season
Meets
By
Spencer Green, Sports Editor
Soon after the girls’
water polo team won CIF, the pool became home to a different high
school sport: swimming. The El Segundo High School Swim Team has
been busy during the first few weeks of their season. The swim team
has had three meets in total, including one League meet against
Culver City High School. The other two meets were practice meets
against Peninsula High School and Mira Costa High School. Both the
Boys’ and Girls’ varsity lost the practice meets, but Girls’ varsity
did win in the meet against Culver City.
Several swimmers are already showing promise for the
season. For the girls’ team are Juniors Kailey Makuta and Chelsea
Kemp. Both girls have been swimming well, and have been successful
in their events at meets. Makuta has been swimming the 500 yard
Freestyle, the 200 yard Freestyle, the 400 yard Freestyle Relay, and
the 200 yard Medley Relay. Kemp has been swimming the 100 yard
Individual Medley and the 200 yard Backstroke events. Standout
swimming for the sophomores is Michelle Saldana, who has been
swimming the 100 yard Breaststroke event. And for the freshmen is
Julianne Allison, who has been swimming well in the 100 yard
Butterfly and 100 yard Backstroke events.
For the boys are Sophomores Sinith Markalande and Dayne
Contarsy, along with Senior Jeff Volosin. Markalande has been
swimming well in the 200 yard Individual Medley and the 100 yard
Butterfly events. Contarsy and Volosin are both currently swimming
in the 200 yard and 500 yard Freestyle events.
While scores and statistics may show the results of the
hard work the swim team has been putting in, the words of the
athletes tells even more. Senior Caitlin Briney said, “Swimming has
been fantastic because it’s with your friends.”
Junior Mattea Perrotta said, “Swimming for the high
school is a much more relaxed environment.”
Junior Brian Crist said, “Its’ going well so far, we’re
getting in a lot of good practices, and hopefully we’ll do well by
the end of the year.”
Local Legend Dylan Sharp, a junior on the swim team, had
this to say of his fellow athletes: “I think we have absolutely
fantastical competitioners, who sometimes swim faster than other
people…but other times don’t. Also, Coach Marcus Lubba drives us
harder than rental cars.”
Senior Tyler Contarsy said, “I’ve grown up in the
water-it’s my life. The team is really fun to be around, and even
with the ups and downs, I think the team can pull it all together.”
Although it is still early in the season, the Swim Team
exudes confidence and a fun-loving attitude. Remember Eagles, just
keep on swimming!
