Girl's Soccer Makes it to C.I.F.

Gatorade could use the
Varsity girl’s soccer team as the newest faces for their ads,
because they have proven that they “do have it in them.” After eight
wins, one loss, and one tie, the Eagles captured first in Pioneer,
and ended up making it to the C.I.F. quarter finals. Even though
they ended up losing in C.I.F., they can hold their heads up high
because they represented our high school well and showed that David
Beckham is not the only one who can dominate the field.
The first C.I.F. game was at home against Arroyo High
School from the San Gabriel Valley on Friday, February 16th.
As Senior Kelly Barnard said, “They were a good team but we
took it.” Freshmen Lauren Farello and Natalie Barbosa
scored the only two goals and continued the lifeline of the team.
With a final score of 2-0, the girl’s soccer team enjoyed a solid
shutout and showed they were here to win.
With a lasting impression from their previous game and a
newfound confidence, the Eagles were ready for St.
Bonaventure, a Roman Catholic school from Ventura on Tuesday,
February 20. There was a tension in the air as both teams realized
the do-or-die situation they were in, for this was a
single-elimination tournament. Likewise, the pace of the game
quickened because it could very well be their last, so everyone gave
it their all. Both teams were evenly matched in the beginning, with
numerous shots from both sides, some of which bounced off the
crossbar or were saved by the keepers. With the score still at 0-0,
it looked like it was up for anybody’s taking. However, at the
thirty-five minute mark, all of the Eagle’s set plays paid off.
Sophomore Courtney Hobbs perfectly placed a free kick, allowing
Senior Tasha Anderson to cross it, Sophomore Natalie
Killinger to drive it at the goal, and Sophomore Lauren
Farello to slide and tap it in. During the half-time prep talk,
Coach Juan Mosquera rallied his team with the ominous words
of, “This is it ladies,” and the Eagles were able to keep their lead
for the remainder of the game, despite the increase in physical
contact and yellow cards.
The Lady Eagles were now in the quarter finals, and
against their most fierce competitor, Oaks Christian High School in
Westlake Village California, on Thursday, February 22nd.
The Eagles had the elements against them, with the rain making it
difficult to see and control the ball. With mud splashing
everywhere, the Oaks Christian High School was able to get an early
lead, and the game ended 3-1, with Senior Tasha Anderson
scoring the only goal for the Eagles. The Eagles had put up a tough
front and had gone down fighting, but as it turns out, lost to the
C.I.F. champions because Oaks Christian High School later took
C.I.F. this year.
This was a memorable season for the Eagles and showed
the potential for next year’s Varsity team. It will be a great loss
to the program when Seniors Tasha Anderson, Kellye Larsen, Kaycee
Wilke, and Kelly Barnard leave, because Anderson has been
a consistent goal-bringer and Larsen, Wilke, and Barnard formed a
solid defense. There will be three returning juniors: Caitlin
Zambito, Kari Proto, and goalkeeper Bronwyn O’Neil. The
rest of the team is made up of sophomores and freshmen who have
shown they have the skills needed for this level of intensity. Each
year, the players bring more tactical skills to the program, and
Coach Juan Mosquera is very excited for future. Mosquera was
voted as the Pioneer League Coach of the Year and All-C.I.F. Coach
of the Year. At the end of the season banquet he said, “Everyone is
an asset to the team. We played each game our way.” Congratulations
to the El Segundo Girl’s Varsity Soccer Team for a job well done.
