Teenage Entrepreneur: Rap Artist Phat Pat
By Zack Roddy, Editor-in-chief

Last year, we met his older brother Ryan Boyles, creator of clothing company Arora, and who has since graduated and is now attending FIDM to sharpen his craft. Art seems to run in the family, for eighteen-year-old Patrick Boyles( aka underground rapper pHaT pAt) has shown real potential for rap music, and has even begun to market his music online. The Bay Eagle had a chance to sit down with Patrick to further discuss his craft.

Bay Eagle: So why the name pHaT pAt?
PB:  I’ve been getting called that for a long time, since middle school at least, when I first started rapping, so it just sort of stuck. It’s catchy and I’m phat, p-h-a-t! (Laughs)
BE: When did you first decide to become a rapper?
PB: Umm…let’s see… I stumbled upon a program called Garageband on my new Mac computer and began recording some acoustic songs. I later became bored with that, and started recording some beats, and from there I starting rapping over them, bought a microphone, and it all just started from there.
BE: How many songs have you recorded so far?
PB: Before I had my mic, I recorded seven songs, but, none of them sounded very good because the quality was really bad. After I bought my mic, I’ve done about twelve songs, and they all sound pretty good.
BE: Is it always just you rapping by yourself or do you ever have anybody come in and help?
PB:  A lot of my songs feature some of my friends. Some of my first songs featured Julian Alonso, Cameron Brown, Lil’ John. Now my songs feature some more well known people in school, like Fonso and Slick Nick, and many others, and if I’m forgetting anyone, my bad. (laughs)
BE: Do you have any shows that will be coming out that our high school population can see?
PB: Not yet, but I’m hoping to get my name out there so that maybe people will want to book me for a show.
BE: What do you think is your main demographic with your music?
PB: I like to kind of reach out to everyone. I know that my dad really likes it a lot, and all of his friends. Basically all ages enjoy it, my grandma likes it, my friends like it, so I think it’s had a pretty good impact on everyone from all ages.
BE: Is it strictly rap, or do you ever like to mix it up?
PB: Its rap, but it’s got a different kind of flair to it. There’s some techno beats, and it’s a very different kind of rap. Experimental is what I like to call it.
BE: Do you have any CDs coming out, and if so, when can we expect them and what’s the name going to be called?
PB: Yes, there are some CDs coming out, we’re going to getting about 200 to be released in a month or so. I haven’t really thought of a title yet so for know it’s just going to be self-titled pHaT pAt.
BE: Who would you say your main influences are as an artist?
PB: Of course I gotta say Tupac from the west side, Biggie Smalls, Nicky Avalon, Eminem, Big L, People Under the Stairs, Mortal Technique. I have a lot of influences ranging from underground to mainstream.
BE: Where can the school currently find your music?
PB: Right now it’s just on MySpace, you can find it on www. Myspace.com/phatpatraps. It gets updated quite frequently, so check it out for the new songs and add me as a friend!
pHaT pAt is now know by many students in El Segundo High, and continues to influence and express himself with his music . You can listen to his newest songs free of charge on MySpace, or wait for his CD to premiere next month.
