Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

This year, a funny thing happened on the way to C.I.F… The Prom. The prom, which we all know is on May 12, is scheduled on the very same day as the C.I.F. swimming finals, the C.I.F. track finals, and a baseball playoff game. I guess we should feel grateful that the American Cancer Society Walk-a-thon in El Segundo is not also scheduled for that day. Oh wait, it is! So that leads us to a very interesting question, “Who schedules the prom day?” Don’t they look at a calendar when they are planning the prom?
The C.I.F. dates for spring sports are scheduled a year in advance. Coaches are told at the conclusion of the season when and where C.I.F. will be hosted. Most spring sports are completely finished by the 3rd weekend of May. It would stand to reason that a good time for the prom would be at the end of May.

There are only three reasons that the prom had to be held on May 12 that I can think of:

  1. The other C.I.F. teams knew that El Segundo was a major contender and secretly scheduled the date.
  2. The Skirball Center is the most happening place for a prom and is completely booked years in advance.
  3. All viable dates are put on the dart board and the basket ball team is allowed to shoot. With the majority of the El Segundo student body participating in school sports, it is inconsequential that a conflict this severe has occurred. A student athlete should never have to make a decision between representing their school at C.I.F. or attending prom. That’s wrong!
