Senior Spotlight: Eduardo Kegan Portillo
by Leslie Estrada, Editor in Chief

Eduardo Kegan Jose Quinn Portillo, better known as Kegan, or the "big guy with red hair," is usually found roaming the halls of El Segundo High. His imposing size is enough to terrorize skinny underclassmen. This exuberant young man was born on March 19, 1989 in Redondo Beach in an ambulance. He was born to a Scottish mother and Mexican father, "Yeah, man, most people think I'm just white, I'm half Mexican too!" He has lived and gone to school in El Segundo all his life. As a child, Kegan was a bit of a hyper boy, "I was just moving around all the time; I caused trouble and jumped off buildings."
He took all this energy and put it to more dynamic past-times such as skateboarding and surfing. "I do it for fun, and it's just so thrilling." Kegan's a captain of the varsity football team and so far, his team has won 3 - 2, taking his part in defensive and offensive tackling. Discussing his accomplishments, he says, "I feel pretty gangster about not winning, and I do my own thing.  I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast, but I like hot butter on my breakfast toast." Besides being athletic, Kegan plays guitar in his spare time; "I had a band, but I jam with people whenever, man." Through football and his leisurely activities, he's met a lot of people. "I hang out with mellow people, crazy people, all winds of people; I have friends from everywhere. I just cruise." One of his close friends, junior Nick Chieppa says, "He knows how to play the game of life, and keeps it real. Kegan's my best friend. I love you baby!" When asked to define his moral support and his hero, Kegan says, "All my family are a pretty big help in my life because they have my back and I can trust them." He surprisingly also saysLeonardo Da Vinci is his hero, "Da Vinci's chill. He's mad creative." Alongside the guitar playing, Kegan writes poetry, expressing his creative side, "I like to sing and play the guitar during the sunset and just writing, it makes me feel relaxed." If anyone were to ask where Kegan is, he would most likely be found at the beach or traveling somewhere or at his friend's house listening to music. His eclectic taste in music ranges from blues to classic rock to hip-hop, "My favorite artists are Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix and Chuck Taylor… also known as the Game; I just listen to everything, man." He also went on to say, "I enjoy eating granola bars, and wearing Jesus sandals. I enjoy fine wine, fine nice women and long walks on the beach."
When he leaves his nest in El Segundo, he plans to go to Long Beach State; "I'm not sure what I want to major in, so I'm undeclared, I guess. I do want to be in the music industry or become a writer". Kegan is a very strong person and he will go far in life with his outgoing and charismatic personality. We hope that our fun-loving hippie will persevere in all of his goals, for they will surely contribute in our society.
