The Bay Eagle editorial staff has created the following set of policies and guidelines by which to operate this year. This published policy seeks to inform the reader about the positions the staff will take regarding its publishing standards. 1. All letters to the editor will be printed as written, except in the case of obscenities, libel, or personal attack. Numerous letters regarding the same topic will be printed as space allows. Minor grammatical and spelling errors will be corrected, but the content of the letter will not be altered. Names will be withheld upon request; however, all letters must be signed by the author upon submission. All letters will be authenticated and identified prior to publication. 2. All editorials will be unsigned and are the majority opinion of the editorial board. The editorial board consists of the Editor-in-chief, assistant editors, and interested staff writers. 3. Signed columns reflect the opinion of the column writer. 4.The Bay Eagle will make retractions of all libelous statements and statements of fact made in error in the following issue if they are brought to the attention of the staff. Retractions will be made on the editorial/opinion page. 5.The Bay Eagle will always make an effort to be fair in covering all aspects of a controversial issue. 6. The Bay Eagle is a public forum for students. We uphold the right of students to exercise freedom of expression as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States and the California State Constitution. Student journalists have the right to report and comment on controversial and important issues that affect this school, community, nation, and world. We will, therefore, subject ourselves to the same legal and ethical standards which govern the news media. Thus the Bay Eagle will refrain from publishing materials considered to be obscene and libelous (as defined by law) and to present a clear and present danger of a substantial physical disruption of the school. The Bay Eagle will not be subject to prior restraint or censorship. 7. The Bay Eagle reserves the right to accept, reject, edit, or cancel any contribution or advertisement. The editorial staff will refuse all materials considered to be racist, sexist, or illegal. The published advertisements are not endorsements made by the staff, administration, or school. |
