Mrs. Riner
by Naomi Gault, Staff Writer

The story of the typical American woman who journeys cross country is that of Mrs. Riner, one of the newest additions to ESHS. At the young age of 22, she has crossed states from her home town in Kansas City, Missouri, to Long Beach California. Mrs. Riner came to teach math at El Segundo High School because of it's "small-town" feel. Mrs. Riner heard El Segundo referred to as Mayberry. Already, all of her Algebra 1 students have welcomed her warmly and made her feel at home.
Back in Kansas City, she attended the University of Missouri Columbia, in order to gain her Bachelor Degree. However, Mrs. Riner did not always dream of earning a teaching credential. She initially began college with plans to become a mechanical engineer. Though both careers would satisfy her love of math, only teaching would enable her to feel fulfilled in her work - through sharing her knowledge with fellow young adults. Her teaching career began in Missouri where she taught at a local high school campus. She says that El Segundo High School has a similar atmosphere, though has some peculiar differences. For instance, soccer is held in the winter, where in Missouri that would not be possible because of snow. Also, the fact the our campus has multiple buildings, was strange to her in comparison to her last school, where all rooms are within one single building.
Her desire to help others could be rooted from her sorority years when she was active in charity work such as teaching little school children to read. She also volunteered as a Young Life leader, which is an outreach to high school students. Her Christian upbringing has greatly influenced her desire to serve the community. When asked who has been an inspirational figure in her life, she replied that Jesus Christ and her mother have been the best advisors in her life. Very passionate about her personal beliefs, whether religious or otherwise, she claims that they show her that she has strength beyond herself.
Though Mrs. Riner is an extremely focused teacher, but she makes sure she has time for her family and friend. She goes to the beach with her husband every week, and loves to run, read, and play racquetball in her spare time.

Superimposed on article:

" I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
