Our Student Body Government

Just like
our national government in the United States, here at El Segundo High School,
we have our own government. The Associated
Student Body (ASB) is our student government, which is led by our ASB
president: Brandon Clarke, vice-president: Jessica Doucette, treasurer: Daniel
Hoffman, secretary: Nick Koffroth, the activities director/advisor: Mr.
Harrison, and all representatives from each class. ASB’s job is to be in
charge of all of the assemblies, dances, rallies, fund-raisers, committees, and
other student associated school business. Everyone in ASB must sometime during
the year be in charge of a committee or project and every event must have a
folder of file of information on the event, so that the next person to be in
charge of the event will know exactly what and what not to do.
All class officers are put into
office by their classes. Only the treasurer, secretary, vice-president, and
president are voted into office by the entire student body. To become an ASB
officer one must fill out an application stating candidacy. The positions that
anyone can run for are: Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Secretary/Treasure
for your class. You must have a certain grade point average, be willing to work
a leadership position, and attend leadership camp.
The leadership camp is called California Association of
Student Councils (CASC). During this four-day experience the ASB officers learn
how to run a successful student council and acquire other leadership abilities.
ASB meets every 5th
period class for 50 minutes. Although their time is limited, they take the
necessary procedures to make the best decisions and make school as fun and
enjoyable for all El Segundo students. Although they already work together as
team, they appreciate any help and participation on school projects from other
students as well.
Each class has different jobs and
all of ASB works together as a team to complete the main goal at task. The
freshman class, led by freshman class governor Tim Fucci, is in charge
of making freshman class decisions and the freshman class float. Although they
have very few jobs, they are still important and help with any other needed
work in ASB.
The sophomore class, which is led by
sophomore class governor Ariel Kapur and Lieutenant Governor Chris
Doukakis, have the duties of helping plan prom and leading fund-raisers.
Junior class governor Sarah Sharp and Lieutenant governor Kelly
Groves, have the duties of leading their class decisions, such as planning
prom, running the snack bars, and fund-raisers.
The senior class treasurer, Daniel
Hoffman’s job is to keep all finances and money records straight for our
ASB government. Another important job in ASB is the secretary. This person’s
job is to take down the minutes of each meeting, take notes of ASB meetings
organize ASB files and committees, and check all approved business. “I am the
right person for this job because I like to be an organizer and I like
organization,” says senior ASB secretary Nick Koffroth. The vice-president’s
job is to work with the ASB president, overseeing everything, and making sure
that the task at hand gets done. “I really like this job because I’m focused,
accomplished, and like to be successful,” says senior ASB vice-president Jessica
Doucette.
The President’s job can sometimes be
considered to be the hardest and most important job. This person has to not
only delegate the entire ASB representatives, but also be head of committees,
be very motivated, enforce rules and policies, and make sure all events happen.
“ASB is really a group effort and I love working with my fellow ASB officers,”
says senior ASB president Brandon Clarke.
ASB is
currently working on the canned food and blood drive, and planning the Luau and
prom 2004.Although they are made up of many different committees and classes
they all work as a team together and try to make the best leadership decisions
for our student body.
