WELCOME TO EL SEGUNDO MIDDLE SCHOOL
PHYSICAL EDUCATION!
Physical Education is a crucial part of the learning process. We believe it is important because it has an effect on a child’s physical, mental, and social well-being. We believe that a positive learning experience in physical education will be a contributing factor in all aspects of life – the child who is well educated physically is likely to become a healthy adult who is motivated to remain healthy.
Physical Education is the only subject, which by the very nature of its content has the potential to affect how a person will feel every moment of every day for the rest of his or her life.
The Physical Education Department at ESMS has as one of its goals to help each student become their own personal trainer. We want to incorporate a Fitness Based curriculum into our current Sports Centered Program. We want to give our students the tools to become fit and healthy for the rest of their lives. Today’s brain, mind, and body research establishes significant links between movement and learning.
Requirements for dress in Physical Education reflect our concern as a department for you safety, freedom of movement and personal hygiene. The administration requires dress violations be sent to the office.

Each day you participate in class, you can earn up to 10 daily points: 80% of your final grade is based on your daily participation points. You can lose points for your failure to:
· Wear appropriate and correctly tied shoes.
· Participate in daily activity
· Cooperate
· Demonstrate appropriate social skills
· Stretch properly
· Run laps
· Sit quietly on class numbers
· Participate in “Fitness Friday” activities
· Utilize the fitness lab in an appropriate manner
· Taking equipment from the baskets without permission
Learning how to eat healthy, how to keep your body in great shape, conflict resolution skills, importance of sportsmanship and teamwork, how to improve on physical skills, and learning the rules and strategy of sports are all part of the state mandated Physical Education Curriculum. It is your job to bring the necessary materials to class. You will be given time in class to do MOST assignments and projects.
If you are not in class you do not have a chance to earn your 10 points for the day. In other words, you will lose 10 participation points for each day missed. Therefore, you will need to complete a 10 point make up assignment to earn that days points. It is your responsibility to ask for the assignment; it will not automatically be given to you (SEE MAKE UP ASSIGNEMENTS). You have one week to complete the assignment. Failure to complete the assignment will result in zero points for the day. No extra credit will be given except for running the mile in under 11 minutes.
If you are at school and can’t participate in P.E. for a medical reason, you need to bring a dated note to excuse you. The note needs to be from a parent/guardian or the school nurse if the illness occurs during the school day. If illness or injury is for longer than three days we ask for a doctors note stating what activities you can’t do and for how long. Please let your teachers know if you injure yourself during class time. An assignment will be given for anyone who can’t participate in P.E.
ESMS gives the state fitness test, “FITNESSGRAM,” once at the beginning of the year and once at the end. Grades are determined on goal setting and improvement, however, and not whether or not you “Pass.”
Written tests and quizzes may be given for any unit of study that is related to both the activity and health concept being studied.
The mile run may be used as a test at various times throughout the year to show improvement in conditioning.
The following list of activities will be emphasized:
Cooperative games, flag football, soft lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, fitness lab, soccer, dance and/or step aerobics, basketball, hockey, badminton, jump rope activities, volleyball, new games, paddleball, track & field, softball, over the line, flickerball, frisbee golf, and Fitness Friday.
Along with an academic letter grade, you will be given a citizenship and work habits mark each trimester. To earn a satisfactory or outstanding mark remember to always:
The only extra credit the P.E. Department will give is running a mile under 11 minutes. We expect the students to fully participate in P.E. to enhance their physical and mental well being.
Students may be sent to the office for the following reasons:
Each
student must purchase a “Pee-Chee” type folder for all worksheets,
tests,
projects, and rules. All work will be
recorded on the table of contents, and is to be saved in this folder
and turned
in at the end of the year as the “FINAL PROJECT.”
The California State Framework’s three goals for Physical Education for kindergarten through twelfth grade are:
1. MOVEMENT SKILLS AND MOVEMENT KNOWLEDGE
Students need to develop effective motor skills and to understand the
fundamentals of movement by practicing & analyzing purposeful movement.
2. SELF-IMAGE AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Students develop and maintain a positive self-image and strive to become
the best that they can be through planned physical activities.
3. SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Students will develop appropriate social behaviors by working independently and
with others during planned physical activity.
* AN ASSIGNMENT MUST BE TURNED IN IF YOU MISSED CLASS!
* Each
assignment is worth +10 points.
(NOT EXTRA CREDIT!)
