Robotics Team - “The GundoBots”

The El Segundo Robotics Team or, “The GundoBots”, was formed in 2006 and is a member of the FIRST Lego League, an international organization for 6th-8th grade students sponsored by LEGO. The robotics season runs from September to December, concluding with the regional championship tournament at Legoland.

As members of the Robotics team, students must create a fully autonomous team robot made entirely of Lego Mindstorms parts, utilizing gears, axles, wheels and motors all designed around the NXT, a small on-board computer about the size of a Gameboy, which controls the robot's every movement. Using Mindstorms software, students learn to write computer programs which will navigate the robot through various missions and challenges. Students learn basic elements of computer programming, mechanical engineering and most importantly, how to work as a team and use their imaginations to create a unique and functional robot.

During the season, the robotics team meets from Tuesday through Thursday, afterschool in JS206. In the off-season, the team meets once a week to continue experimenting with computer programming and the design of the robot. Also in the off-season, our team works in conjunction with the robotics team at El Segundo High School where high school team members serve as mentors and the students can exchange ideas.
