MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Richmond Street Families,

Thank you for doing such a great job of adhering to the new bell schedule. The minimum day Mondays have been very productive for our teachers.  The Mondays have been designated as follows:

1st Monday of the month – School-based professional development

2nd Monday of the month – Staff meeting

3rd Monday of the month – K – 12 Professional Development

4th Monday of the month – Grade level meetings

Please note Monday, October 31, Halloween there will be no school for the students. Teachers will be meeting district-wide.

The staff has used this time very wisely.  Some of the things we have worked on are:

·          STAR data analysis

o         To refine instruction

o         To determine which students need intervention

·          Developing a new writing assessment that more accurately reflects the data we need to refine instruction

·          Implementing 6 + 1 Strategies of Writing

·          Checking that math and language arts texts are aligned to grade level standards and supplementing where needed

·          Creating a school wide plan with a consultant regarding how to eliminate bullying

·          Developing a new homework policy for kindergarteners based on teaching literacy concepts and analysis

·          Reviewing and refining school-wide emergency and safety plans

We have much more planned for the remainder of the year. Some areas we will be working on will be P.E. professional development, technology curriculum, continued work with the UCLA Writing Project and Critical Friends Groups.  We are dedicated to establishing a Professional Learning Community where teachers continually strive to ensure a high level of academic achievement for every student.

We are looking forward to our Fall Festival on Friday, October 28.  This is a tremendously fun event for the entire family.  There will be games, music, food and more.  We have a Silent Auction and all the teachers and administrators get involved by offering to take the highest bidding student for a fun afternoon out.  We hope you will join us.

We will be unable to hold the Halloween Parade this year due to all the work involved to prepare for the Fall Festival and because students will not be at school on the 31st.  Classrooms will still have Halloween parties but students in grades 1 – 5 will not be allowed to wear a costume to school.  Kindergarteners will have their own festivities.  Please check your Kindergarten teacher’s newsletter for more information.  Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

Dickie Van Breene

Principal
