MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Richmond Street Families,

October is a fun and busy month.  Please remember every Monday is a minimum day and Monday, October 29 is a Pupil Free Day.  All K – 12 teachers will be meeting for a special presentation by William Strauss, author of Millenials Rising, a book about the current generation of children in school.  This informative presentation will be followed by a panel discussion consisting of executives from the business community and representatives from our teaching staff.  The discussion will focus on what we as educators need to do to prepare our students for careers in a global economy. We will be sure to gain valuable insights that we will be able to apply to your child’s education.

Friday, October 26 is an exciting night at Richmond Street School for the entire family.  It’s the Fall Festival.  There will be games, music, food and more.  We have a Silent Auction and all the teachers and administrators get involved by offering to take the highest bidding students for a fun outing after school.  We hope you will join us on the playground behind the school between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m.

We’ll celebrate Halloween with a parade for grades 1 – 5 on Wednesday, October 31 at 2:20 in Library Park.  Parents are invited to watch the parade from Library Park.  Please read on for costume details. Kinder parents will be advised of Halloween activities by your child’s teacher.

Sincerely,

Dickie Van Breene

Principal

Appropriate School Shoes

Open toe shoes are not allowed at school.  The plastic clogs that are very popular now are also not appropriate for school.  We have had several injuries due to these types of shoes.  Please send your child to school in tennis shoes so they can run, jump, and play safely.  Please pack a pair of tennis shoes in your child’s backpack if your child must wear fancy shoes for a special occasion.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

International Walk to School Day:  is Wednesday, October, 3. We are encouraging students and their parents to join students around the world and in our own neighborhood (Center Street is also participating) by walking to school.  This will help alleviate traffic around our school and it also promotes healthy habits.  Many of our teachers and administrators will be walking to school, too!

Arbor Day:  We would like to thank TruGreen for donating several trees for our Richmond Street Arbor Day that was held on September 29.  Each class planted a tree and every student went home with a “Baby Tree Kit”.  Students can grow their own Blue Spruce from the seeds provided in the “kit” and then plant the tree in their backyard.  We would also like to give a special thank you to Mrs. Pickett who played our evergreen tree.

Congratulations to our new school site representatives:  Mrs. Nilsson, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. DeAngelis were elected to School Site Council.  Mrs. Stoker is our alternate. They join Ms. Gulian and Mr. Bonilla on the council. We would like to thank all of you who were nominated and we hope you will continue to stay involved by joining PTA.

Loading Zone:  The loading zones are for pick-up and drop-off only.  For the safety of all students please drive carefully and slowly.  The El Segundo Police Department may ticket individuals who are double-parked.  Crossing guards will be on site to help students and to monitor traffic.

Visitors and Volunteers:  per Education Code and for the safety of students, all visitors and volunteers must first check in at the school office.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PTA

Wow, school is in full swing and the PTA is off and running! If you haven't already done so and would still like to, PTA is continuing to accept PTA membership envelopes.  Your membership helps our kids!

The pink Parent Volunteer cards went home last week.  These cards help us find volunteers for all of the activities PTA supports.  We have a wide variety of ways parents can volunteer from the work room to sending in baked goods for meetings.  Take a look at the card and send it back to school with your child.  We would love to have you helping us!

The Fall Festival Committee is working furiously to put together the best fall festival ever.  Please mark your calendars for October 26 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.  We will have games, food, sweet walk, music and our ever-popular silent auction.....speaking of the silent auction, Shannon Magid is accepting all donations for the auction.  You may leave donations in the office.

Also this month is our Dream Dinners promotion.  The Dream Dinners in West Los Angeles will give a portion of the profit to our school if you book a session between Oct. 17 and Nov. 15.  All information will be given at our October PTA meeting. Last year we made over $500 from Dream Dinners!

A huge thank you to Brandy Smith for all of her hard work on our Innisbrook Fall Fund Raiser.  Job well done!   Well, another thank you to all of the parents who attended last month's meeting.  PLEASE COME AGAIN!  This month our meeting is on October 8 at 7:15 p.m in the cafeteria.  I hope to see you there!

Richmond Street School Walk to School Day – Wednesday, October 3

It has become widely accepted in the fitness community that the average person should walk 10,000 steps per day to help maintain optimum health.  10,000 steps are equal to 5 miles! Sure kids play, and have their sports activities, but an easy way to make sure your children achieve the goal of 10,000 steps is by walking to school (and walking back home from school ) each day.  Most children who attend RSS live within a mile of the school.

Top Ten Reasons for Walking to School:

1.       Walk to school - make our environment cleaner!

2.       Walk to school - save money on gasoline!

3.       Walk to school - enjoy the opportunity to talk to your children about their day!

4.       Walk to school - relieve the traffic congestion around the campus!

5.       Walk to school - appreciate the beautiful California weather!

6.       Walk to school - teach your children road safety rules

7.       Walk to school - get to know your neighborhood!

8.       Walk to school - jumpstart your day!

9.       Walk to school - talk to your friends on the way!

10.     Walk to school - it's free!

This is the year El Segundo Schools go Green!  Leave the cars and home and get out and walk!  Join us

by walking on the 3rd of October!

JOIN US FOR FALL FESTIVAL 2007

Show your Blues’ spirit by supporting Richmond Street School’s 8th Annual Fall Festival. And what is Fall Festival?  It is a carnival sponsored by the PTA which generated over $33K last year and gets bigger and better year after year.  So skip the LA County Fair and spend your money locally to help benefit our wonderful school.

The big night is Friday, October 26, 2007 from 5 – 8 p.m. at Richmond Street School. There will be plenty of entertainment for kids of all ages including fun games, yummy food, music and the ever-popular Sweet Walk, where lucky winners take home tasty treats.  This year the food court will be expanded to include many more adult food options.  And while you’re at it, contribute to the fifth-grade class booths by purchasing food and beverages to help fund their class picnic. So come hungry and feed the whole family!

Spark your curiosity by checking out the amazing Silent Auction where local families and businesses generously donate some of their finest goods.  Everything from weekend getaways, to spa packages, to dining certificates and even pet care gift baskets can be bid on.  And don’t forget the special teacher outings and even grade level theme baskets which can really put a smile on your child’s face. So come with your checkbook in hand and ready to outbid even your closest friends!

The Fall Festival is our school’s largest fundraiser and could not be possible without the support of our parent volunteers.  You can get involved in many ways.  Being part of the Fall Festival planning committee, manning a booth the night of the event, set-up/clean-up, selling tickets after school or at the event, contributing baked goods to the Sweet Walk, or donating items to your grade level baskets and/or Silent Auction.  Anything that your schedule will allow would be most appreciated.

At this time, the Fall Festival committee is making an additional plea for small, child friendly donation items to help stock the game prize inventory. Baskets of all sizes and shrink wrap are also in need to package the silent auction donations, so please feel free to drop off any of these items in the PTA room adjacent to the auditorium.

Admission is free, but tickets are required for food and games and may be purchased for $.50 each after school or at the festival. Look for ticket pre-sale order forms coming home with your children. Any additional questions regarding ticket sales may be directed to Brandy Smith at 310-615-1944.  For all other inquiries, contact Cathy McKenna, Festival Chairman at 310-819-5122.

All proceeds go entirely to support Richmond Street School.  Hope you can make it!

RECYCLING (FUNDINGFACTORY) FUNDRAISING PROGRAM

Richmond Street School PTA is participating in the FundingFactory Recycling Program! This fundraiser is FREE and simple because there's nothing to sell, no paperwork to fill out and no deadline. The program runs year-round, accumulating constant income for our efforts. But we won't get very far without your support. Please donate your empty printer cartridges and used cell phones to our school and we'll take it from there! We will recycle the cartridges and cell phones through FundingFactory to earn cash.

Last year alone, more than 300 million cartridges were thrown away, while 30,000,000 cell phones were tossed or replaced. We're alleviating the volume of waste that goes into landfills, while collecting cash we need to keep our school running smoothly. Your help is vital to our fundraising success. Cell phones and cartridges can be dropped off at the following locations: with your classroom teacher or RSS Office.

FundingFactory also sponsors a businesses support program, where your employer can help out our school without spending a cent. Prepaid shipping boxes can be sent, free of charge, directly to any business, organization or other facility within the continental United States.  Business supporters simply need to load the boxes and leave them for the next UPS pickup. If you work for a company that may be interested in supporting us, please call Funding Factory toll-free at 1-888-883-8237. Give the customer service representative our school identification number, 119769, and they'll set you up to support our account.

Thank you for your support!
